Society for Freshwater Science – Student Resource Committee

Posted by:

We are now in contact with our friends and colleagues at the SFS Student Resource Committee to promote collaboration between young freshwater scientists around the World!

WHAT IS THE SOCIETY FOR FRESHWATER SCIENCE?

The Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) is an international scientific organization whose purpose is to promote further understanding of freshwater ecosystems (rivers, streams, lakes, reservoirs, and estuaries) and ecosystems at the interface between aquatic and terrestrial habitats (wetlands, bogs, fens, riparian forests and grasslands). The society fosters exchange of scientific information among the membership, and with other professional societies, resource managers, policy makers, educators, and the public. Society members study the genetics to community structure of freshwater organisms, freshwater ecosystem function, physical processes that affect freshwaters, and linkages between freshwater ecosystems and surrounding landscapes. Applied aspects of their science include habitat and water quality assessment, conservation, fisheries and invasive species management, integrated water resource management, and restoration.

WHAT IS THE STUDENT RESOURCES COMMITTEE?

The Student Resources Committee (SRC) provides students with representation in the society and an opportunity to meet and interact with other students and members of SFS (Society for Freshwater Science). If you are a undergraduate or graduate student member and interested in gaining experience in service to your society, please contact the 2013-2014 chair, Dustin Kincaid (kincai32@msu.edu).

WHAT DO WE DO?

We have representatives on many SFS committees as well as our own sub-committees that actively participate in fundraising and organizing activities that enhance the sense of community within SFS. Conference events and fundraisers organized by the SRC include the Graduate Student Workshop, Student-Mentor Mixer, Live Auction, Silent Book Auction, and Merchandise Sales.
